In high school, students can create learning situations that they totally control. For example, German students of French as a foreign language addressed the subject of francophone countries in choosing their country of interest and subject of interest, gathered material online and got in contact with students of the chosen country to confirm information and exchange personal views on the matter. They published their results on the Internet page of their school.

In high school mathematics, students discovered conic sections by exploring sections of a double-napped cone. For that, they formed a double-napped cone out of play-dough and examined what kind of different shapes you can get if you cut the double-napped cone once. For the cutting process, they were provided with yarn. By being given the space to explore, they figured out by themselves which shapes were inherently different from each other and which fit in the same category. They also came up with the distinction of basic conics and degenerated conics.
